  • File Systems Overview

    Hard disks under Solaris are divided into filesystems ( a.k.a. partitions). The default Solaris installation divides into three filesystems: /, /usr, and /export.

    The root ( / ) filesystem. This filesystem is not usually shared across the network because it contains files which are generally kept on the local machine. Most system administrators will break out the /var directory onto its own partition, as it can grow in size quite quickly, because of the logs files contained within it's directory structure. System configuration files in /etc are kept in the root partition.

    /usr. Pronounced "user". The /usr filesystem is generally larger than the / partition. It also contains files that are to be shared across the network using NFS.

    /export. If diskless clients are used, the /export partition can be used to share root or swap space across the network for these clients. Generally, /export will also contain the {home} directories for users.
